The Washington Capitals defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 for their fourth win in a row. That’s a season long and they keep on streaking. The Caps scored the first four goals of the game and Alex Ovechkin continued his chase towards NHL history.

The first period was scoreless as the Jets outshot the Caps 10-9.

The Caps struck first at 3:25 on a wrist shot from Trevor van Riemsdyk for his second goal of the season. Nic Dowd and Aliaksei Protas had the helpers.

On the power play Evgeny Kuznetsov doubled the Caps lead at 8:21 for his fourth goal of the season on a backhanded shot. John Carlson and Conor Sheary had the assists.

While the Caps were shorthanded Marcus Johansson got tripped up at 9:55 and was awarded a penalty shot. With a good fake he flipped the puck into the net to make it 3-0 for his seventh goal of the season.

Lars Eller then rebounded a shot at 15:24 for his sixth goal of the season. Anthony Mantha and Dmitry Orlov had the assists and it was 4-0 against the second best team in the Western Conference.

That would be the score after 40 as the Caps outshot the Jets 15-9.

The Jets got on the board in the third period twice. Adam Lowry scored 35 seconds in. Pierre Luc Dubois cut the deficit in half at 3:29. Later in the period they pulled their goalie.

At 17:48 with all the Caps fans chanting “Ovi” Alex Ovechkin was set up by Dmitry Orlov for an empty net goal for the third straight game. It was his fourth straight empty netter and the 797th of his career.

Shots were even at 12 in the third period and the Jets outshot the Caps overall 36-31. Charlie Lindgren won his fourth straight game in net with 29 saves.
