Alex Ovechkin’s road to 800 goals
The chase towards greatness
Yes his last four goals in his last three games were empty net goals but goals are goals and the way myself and a lot of people look at it, those goals make up for the ones he lost in those two lockouts and couple of pandemic shortened seasons.
But what makes this even more remarkable is even after hoisting the Stanley Cup, the chase toward greatness for Ovechkin only just begun.
When he scored 500 goals it was still kind of an IF whether or not he could catch Wayne Gretzky. Nowadays, and even despite a pandemic, that IF has turned into a WHEN.
He could score his 800th goal and eventually pass Gordie Howe as soon as this week or next week. He could pass Gretzky as early as next season or as late as the season after next season if he continues his scoring pace.
One thing that is truly remarkable and I saw this on Twitter via Hockey Reference, Gretzky scored 19 goals after turning 37. In September, Ovechkin turned 37 and he already has 17 goals.
That is truly remarkable. People wonder when Ovechkin will slow down and when age will catch up to him. But it looks like those haters and naysayers will have to wait a little longer.
With a hat trick tomorrow night against the Chicago Blackhawks, Ovechkin will reach 800. Or he could very well do it on home ice.
After the Blackhawks road game, the Capitals will be home for three straight games. Get your tickets now because you could be seeing history.
