No Ovechkin goal but Capitals rally to beat Red Wings in overtime
The Washington Capitals overcame a 2-0 first period deficit to win 4-3 in overtime thanks to a game winner from Dmitry Orlov. All eyes were on Alex Ovechkin including Gordie Howe’s sons, who were in attendance at the game.
Sadly they didn’t see Ovechkin score as he had three shots on goal. But they did see an amazing game.
David Perron got the Red Wings on the board at 7:30. Oskar Sundqvist doubled their lead at 15:36 with a power play goal. 2-0 was the score after 20 with the Caps leading in shots 10-6.
At 15:35 in the second Nic Dowd shot the puck right on target with Alex Ovechkin and Erik Gustafsson with the assists. 11 seconds later, Dowd scored again on a deflection with Nic Jensen and Nicolas Aube Kubel with the helpers for his seventh goal of the season.
2-2 was the score after two with the Caps leading in shots 17-7.
Lucas Raymond scored at 4:49 in the third to give the Red Wings the lead. At 5:59 the Caps tied it back up with Erik Gustafsson’s fourth goal in three games. Lars Eller and Aube Kubel had the assists.
The game would go to overtime with the score tied at three.
The Caps would score in overtime at 4:38 on a bomb from Dmitry Orlov for his second goal of the season. Marcus Johansson and Dowd had the assists.
Dowd, who had two goals in the winning effort, said this:
“Every single game from this point on is important to us. You know we don’t have the ability to take nights off — you know, truthfully, like we probably have in the past where we played really well early and every now and then you kind of have a stinker of a game. But tonight, the game — really every game going forward — really matters.”
It was an epic game and the crowd was into it from start to finish. The Caps will be back in action on Thursday night at the Ottawa Senators.
