In what was another thrilling overtime game, the Washington Capitals got a huge goal from Marcus Johansson in overtime to stun the Ottawa Senators 3-2.

Alex DeBrincat scored at 4:50 in the first to put the home team up 1-0. With the Caps on the power play later in the period, they tied it.

The goal came from Evgeny Kuznetsov and it was set up by Alex Ovechkin at 7:01. Ovi fed Kuzy a cross ice pass from the left face off circle to the right face off circle with John Carlson providing the secondary assist. It was Kuznetsov’s fifth goal of the season.

The Caps led in shots 12-5 in the opening period as the score was tied at one after 20.

At 5:25 in the second period the Caps took the lead. Off a shot from Ovechkin that was set up by Dmitry Orlov, Sonny Milano rebounded it in giving Ovi a two assist night. It was Milano’s fourth goal of the season.

2-1 Caps was the score after two with the Caps leading in shots 15-7. The Senators would get a four minute power play in the third when Milano was called for a high sticking double minor.

At 3:04 Drake Batherson scored on the man advantage. 2-2 was the score after regulation as the Senators led in shots 12-11 in the third period but were outshot 2-1 in overtime and 40-25 overall by the Caps.

There wasn’t a goal from Alex Ovechkin but the great eight made history yet again. He had six shots on goal and with those six he passed Ray Bourque (6,209) for the most shots in NHL history.

In overtime the hero was Johansson as he raced down the ice to pot the game wining goal for his eighth of the season. The game winner was assisted by Erik Gustafsson and Kuznetsov.

The Caps host the Winnipeg Jets tomorrow night. Or tonight depending on what time you’re reading this.
