The Washington Capitals have one more game before Christmas and Alex Ovechkin would like to gift the home crowd a chance to witness him either tying or passing Gordie Howe for second place on the NHL’s all time goal scoring list.
Tonight is the second and final meeting between the teams this season. Washington defeated the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on the road on Dec. 11. Five different players scored for the Capitals in the win while goaltender Charlie Lindgren stopped 29 of 31 shots faced.
The Capitals are 54-28-5-9 all time against the Winnipeg and Atlanta franchise and 18-6-4 against the Jets since their relocation in 2011-12. In addition the Capitals are 9-2-2 in their last 13 games against them and have won nine straight home games against the Jets.
Ovechkin has recorded 95 points with 51 goals and 44 assists in 70 career games against that franchise, the most goals he has scored against a single team and tied for the second most points he has against a single opponent.
