On historic night for Alex Ovechkin, Capitals defeat Jets

The Washington Capitals got a big 4-1 win to sweep the season series over the Winnipeg Jets. Alex Ovechkin scored twice and is now in sole possession of second place on the NHL’s all time goal scoring list.

Ovechkin’s first goal came on a snipe at 18:22 to put the Capitals on the board. Dylan Strome and Conor Sheary had the assists.

1-0 was the score after one with the Caps leading in shots 10-7.

Sonny Milano doubled the Caps lead at 12:46 with Ovechkin and Conor Sheary setting him up in front of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

2-0 was the score after two with the Caps leading in shots 10-3 in the second period.

In the third period the Caps went up 3-0 when Erik Gustafsson set up Garnet Hathaway who found his podcast bro Nic Dowd for his eighth goal of the season.

Kevin Stenlund got the Jets on he board at 9:59. Ovechkin scored with one minute left in the game on an empty net assisted by Evgeny Kuznetsov for his 22nd of the season and 802nd of his career to pass Gordie Howe.

Ovechkin’s Russian buddy Dmitry Orlov spoke on the game and the milestone:

"“It is just crazy to see and it is a huge number and it is a great accomplishment for his game, for his person and for his family, too. The way he is going now, for sure it is awesome and you hope he is going to stay healthy — and another day, another milestone.”"

The Caps were outshot 16-7 in the third period but had the edge in shots 27-26 overall. Charlie Lindgren made 25 saves in the victory.
