Watch the moment Alex Ovechkin became the 2nd of all-time in scoring goals
The Washington Capitals are off until Tuesday but fans are still on a high of watching Alex Ovechkin make NHL history. The Great Eight is now second all time in the NHL in goal scoring.
Ovechkin scored 801 to tie Gordie Howe and 802 at the end of their game against the Winnipeg Jets. The milestone was an empty netter with one minute remaining in the game. The Caps won 4-1.
Now Ovechkin only trails the great one Wayne Gretzky who has an NHL record 894 goals. It was once believed that the record would be unbreakable but each year Ovechkin made us believers.
Gordie Howe passed away at 88 in 2016. Ovechkin met him in 2009 at the NHL All Star Game in Montreal. You’ve read about his stick collections but the top thing Ovechkin owns is his opinion is that signed picture of him and Mr. Hockey.
“Obviously, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky’s stick, Mario Lemieux’s stick… (the photo is) probably the top one,” Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin scored his 802nd goal in his 1,310th career game, passing Howe (1,767 games played) for second in the all time goals list in 457 fewer games played. Ovechkin has averaged 0.61 goals per game during his 18 year career, the seventh highest rate in NHL history among players with at least 200 goals.
Howe averaged 0.45 goals per game during his career while Gretzky averaged 0.60. Sine turning 35 years old on Sept. 17, 2020, Ovechkin has maintained his career goals per game average, scoring 86 goals in 158 games played.
That averages 0.61 goals per game and marks the highest rate among players following their 35th birthday.
Ovechkin told the media after the game:
“I’m proud not for myself, but I’m proud for the organization, for the fans who have been with us all those years, ups and downs, and, obviously, we’re still not done and we just move forward.”
We’ll have more Ovechkin coverage in the coming days as we would like to congratulate him for this historic milestone.
