Alex Ovechkin will be a game time decision tonight
The Washington Capitals held an optional morning skate at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. After participating in yesterday’s practice, Alex Ovechkin was once again on the ice. Coach Peter Laviolette said he would be a game time decision tonight as he’s day to day with a lower body injury.
Yesterday Ovechkin skated on a four man line with Dylan Strome, Nicolas Aube Kubel and Aliaksei Protas. NAK makes his return to Colorado after he nearly fumbled the Stanley Cup when the team got their photoshoot on the ice. So does goaltender Darcy Kuemper.
Ovechkin is on pace to score 50 goals this season after recording 30 goals thus far. If he reaches the mark he would pass Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for the most 50 goal seasons in NHL history with 10. The only seasons he didn’t score 30 goals was the pandemic shortened 2021 season.
Ovechkin also has 22 assists for 52 points. He looks to record 100 points for the first time since the 2009-10 season where the Caps were the beasts of the east with the best record and points in the league.
If Ovechkin returns to the lineup tonight look for Anthony Mantha or Aliaksei Protas to sit out. Mantha was on the top line in Saturday night’s 6-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.
There are rumors going around that the Caps could make a move. Lars Eller or Mantha could be the odd men out. Maybe the Caps will look to add a defenseman as several blue liners, in fact all but one, are on expiring contracts.

Man this summer is going to be interesting no matter if the season ends after the first round or after a Cup. You can catch tonight’s game at 9 p.m. eastern on NBC Sports Washington. Should be plenty of Caps fans making the trip to create a home ice advantage on the road.
