The Washington Capitals weren’t done making news this All Star weekend as they re signed young rising star Sonny Milano to a three year contract extension with an average annual value of $1.9 million.

Prior to the season, the 26 year old forward struggled as he was trying to find a team but no one wanted him. Shortly after the season began, the Caps signed him to a depth forward role and it turned out to be a good thing.

He has recorded 22 points in 40 games with the Caps this season with eight goals and 14 assists. He made his Caps debut on Nov. 5, 2022 and his eight goals rank tied for fourth on the team while his 22 points rank sixth.

In addition, Milano ranks tied for third on the Capitals in even strength goals as all eight of his goals came at five on five. The six foot, 194 pound forward is on pace to record 37 points this season which would mark a career high.

Last season Milano recorded 34 points in 66 games with the Anaheim Ducks with 14 goals and 20 assists. That was a single season career high in assists, points, and games played while tying a career high in goals.

Milano was originally taken by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round at 16th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft. He has recorded 118 points in 171 career AHL games with 47 goals and 71 assists and won the Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters in 2016.

Milano has recorded 103 points in 237 career NHL games with 44 goals and 59 assists with Washington, Columbus, and Anaheim.
