Recently NHL and St. Louis Blues legend Brett Hull spoke to Guy Giles of Betway Insider to talk about the game today and players that have impressed him the most. He talked about the Seattle Kraken, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers, the New Jersey Devils good season, and even Alex Ovechkin.

Like the rest of us, he believes the great eight can catch the great one for the NHL all time goals record and he said some good stuff. Ovechkin passed Hull’s mark of 741 last season. Hull was fifth on the all time goal scoring list and since then Ovechkin has worked his way down to second with 816 career goals.

He’s now 78 away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 894.

Here’s what Hull said on Ovechkin:

“It’s really incredible. You look at other sports and usually consistency is a guy getting 20 or 25 goals for six or seven seasons. Well, this guy’s been getting 50 goals for 18 years. It’s incredible. He’s a marvel to watch. He’s never changed the way he’s played. He’s a beast out there. No one can shoot harder. But you still can’t stop him after all these years. He is a freak of nature and I have really enjoyed watching him.”

Hull was then asked by Giles, “How big of an achievement is it for him to be even threatening Gretzky’s goal record?”:

“It’s incredible because I got 741 goals myself and I don’t think I could have scored another goal. I thought that was about as close as anyone could get to Gordie Howe with 801 and Wayne way up with 894. In all seriousness, 80 goals for him is two seasons, and he’s got plenty of life left in him. So, unless something happens, he looks unstoppable to catch Wayne’s goal record, although that’ll be the only record of Wayne’s which will ever be broken because all the other ones are crazy.”

The Washington Capitals captain seems to be getting more approval from legends of the game as he chases hockey’s most historic record. It’ll be a fun ride the rest of the way whether the Capitals make the playoffs this season or not.

Even if they don’t, I would think we have three years left of watching Ovechkin and I certainly am not taking that for granted. Neither should you.
