Dmitry Orlov 2023 Capitals Report Card
We now begin our Washington Capitals end of season player report cards and this will be different compared to previous years. We’ll also include the lads who got traded so we’ll start things out grading Dmitry Orlov’s time with the Caps this season before he joined the Boston Bruins.
Of course Orlov and the Bruins will be in action on Tuesday night against the Florida Panthers. In all Orlov finished the season with seven goals and 29 assists for 36 points.
With the Capitals he had three goals and 16 assists for 19 points. With the Bruins he had four goals and 13 assists for 17 points. In just his third Bruins game he had two goals. That came on Feb. 28 at the Calgary Flames.
Every game Orlov scored in with the Capitals resulted in wins. With the Capitals this season Orlov had a Corsi For percentage of 51.45 percent, an Expected Goals For percentage of 50.83 percent and a High Danger Chances For percentage of 48.99 percent, via Natural Stat Trick.
In the end though the Caps had to trade Orlov. He carried a cap hit of $5.1 million and he definitely wanted a raise. Things went south in contract extension talks and as the Caps got cold they had to make moves at the deadline.
They sent Orlov and Hathaway to the Bruins for Craig Smith and a 2025 second rounder and a 2024 third rounder. They originally had a 2023 first rounder in the package but the Caps traded that away in a different deal.
That deal was the Erik Gustafsson for Rasmus Sandin deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. So technically they lost Orlov and Gus for Sandin which was a home run.
Grade B: Orlov finishes with a B in his almost final season with the Capitals. We’ll see what happens this summer when he hits free agency but doubt the Caps can afford him.
