Next up on our Washington Capitals player end of season report cards we look at the small sample size of rookie Vincent Iorio who was drafted by the team in the second round at 55th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Iorio appeared in three Caps games all in the month of March. Those games were March 4 at the San Jose Sharks where he had an assist in his NHL debut. He assisted on an Alex Ovechkin goal which was a primary helper.

Then he played on the sixth at the Los Angles and then at home on March 9 against the New Jersey Devils. So one assist in three games with three shots while averaging 14:21 minutes of ice time.

The defenseman’s advanced stats weren’t that good but at the same time he only played in three NHL games. He had a 39.08 percent Corsi For percentage, a 26.77 percent Expected Goals For percentage, and a 28.57 percent High Danger Chances For percentage via Natural Stat Trick.

With the Hershey Bears this season he appeared in 63 regular season games and recorded two goals and 20 assists for 22 points. The Bears open the Calder Cup playoffs against the Charlotte Checkers on Friday April 28.

There’s nothing like playing in your first NHL game but to be able to have your first point be an assist to a legend of the game like Alex Ovechkin is second to none.

He told NBC Sports Washington’s Al Koken after the game, “He is one of the greatest to ever play the game. It’s pretty special to get my first point on one of his goals.”

He then told the beat writers in the locker room, “I look up to (Ovi), a lot of players look up to him and I’m happy.”
