Next up on our Washington Capitals player report card series is Beck Malenstyn. He is usually a standout on the Hershey Bears but sometimes his name gets called up.

In the case of the 2022-23 season, Malentsyn got called up twice. He first got called up in late October before hurting himself on Nov. 1 in an overtime loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Up until that point he assisted with the primary helper on Nic Dowd’s goal in a 6-3 win at the New Jersey Devils. Then in a 3-0 win over the Nashville Predators on the road he had a goal. After the injury he got called back up to the Caps in April to close out the season. He finished with a goal and an assist for two points in nine games.

Malenstyn had a Corsi For percentage of 40 percent, an Expected Goals For percentage of 29.04 percent and a 21.74 percent High Danger Chances For percentage via Natural Stat Trick.

The 2016 fifth rounder taken at 145th overall by the Caps had six goals and four assists for 10 points in 40 games with the Hershey Bears this season as they now embark on the Calder Cup playoffs.

He got loaned to the Bears for that playoff run. The 25 year old also had 34 hits with the Caps. He recorded his first career NHL goal and point on Nov. 30, 2021 against the Florida Panthers. He has three points in 24 career NHL games.

Malentyn’s 0.26 points per game rate in Hershey this season is the second highest rate of his career. He also ranked tied for first on the Bears in shorthanded goals with one.

Grade C: Overall Malenstyn was good but even he couldn’t survive the injury bug that plagued the team throughout the season. He gets a C though for a decent year. Maybe he’ll be better next year if healthy.
