Next up on our Washington Capitals end of season player report cards we take a look at Sonny Milano who was signed as a free agent with the Caps for depth just days after the season began. Boy was that a good move considering at the time we didn’t know how badly the Caps would need him.

Milano played in 64 games for the Caps and had 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points. He also had 15 blocks and 39 hits while averaging 12:54 minutes of ice time.

Milano’s best game was a three point night with two goals and an assist on Nov. 11 at home against the Tampa Bay Lighting in a game the Caps won 5-1.

Milano had a 50.11 percent Corsi For percentage, a 49.72 percent Expected Goals For percentage and a 48.26 percent High Danger Chances For percentage via Natural Stat Trick.

He not only has good puck handling skills, speed and goal scoring abilities, he’s also got the best hair in the NHL. Milano turns 27 in May and signed a three year, $5.7 million contract extension back in February.

Former Caps coach Peter Laviolette said to the media back in November on Milano’s play, “He’s been really good. He makes plays out there. He’s a talented guy, he sees the ice well and he makes good hockey plays.”

Milano’s two goal game against the Lighting was my favorite game watching him. Especially his second goal after he sprung out the penalty box and was all alone to finish off a breakaway.

Grade A-: Milano proved himself worthy of an extension from the Caps and should have a big season coming up next year now that he knows he’s got a team that believes in him. He definitely will have a better summer ahead knowing he’s got a home now. He should be an X factor on the Caps next season.
