The Washington Capitals were going to re sign Alex Alexeyev. It was only a matter of time. On Tuesday morning the team made it official as both parties agreed to a two year, $1.65 million contract. He will make all of it in the NHL.

Alexeyev will make $775,000 this upcoming season and $875,000 the net season. Now only Martin Fehervary remains as a priority to re sign as a restricted free agent.

The 23 year old recorded five points which were all assists in 32 games with the Caps this season. The six foot four, 215 pound defenseman ranked tied for fifth on the Capitals in blocked shots per 60 minutes at 5.46 and averaged 1:07 of shorthanded ice time per game.

The defenseman also appeared in four games with the Hershey Bears recording one assist. The St. Petersburg, Russia native made his NHL debut on Dec. 29, 2021 against the Nashville Predators and recorded 19 points with a goal and 18 assists in 68 games with AHL Hershey during the 2021 22 season.

Alexeyev ranked second among Bears defensemen in penalty minutes with 51, tied for second in games played with 68 and third in plus minus with a plus six. He has recorded five assists in 33 career games with Washington. In 142 AHL games with Hershey he has recorded 50 points with six goals and 44 assists.

Alexeyev was selected in the first round at 31st overall in the 2018 NHL Draft just weeks after the team won the Stanley Cup.

Shortly after the contract news, Alexeyev took to his Instagram and his caption was this, “Happy to stay in Washington for two more years #allcaps”.
