The Washington Capitals have once again re upped Hershey Bears standout Michael Sgarbossa. They signed the forward to a two year, two way contract. He will make $775,000 per year with the Caps and $525,000 with the Bears.
The 30 year old recorded 58 points in 60 regular season games with the Bears, Washington’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate with 21 goals and 37 assists. The six foot, 187 pound forward let Hershey in assists, points and power play assists with 16.
In addition, Sgarbossa ranked tied for first on the team in game winning goal with five, second in power play points with 18, tied for second in plus minus with a plus 19 and third in goals.
His 58 points marked his highest single season point total since 2018 19 when he had 65 points in 75 games in his first season with the Bears. His 37 assists marked a career high.
In 218 games with Hershey, Sgarbossa has recorded 194 points with 79 goals and 115 assists. He tallied three points with a goal and two assists in Hershey’s four game Atlantic Division Semifinals series against the Charlotte Checkers.
The Campbellville, Ontario native has appeared in 17 games with the Caps since the 2019 20 season. He has recorded six points with two goals and four assists.
In 65 carer NHL games with the Capitals, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks, and Colorado Avalanche, Sgarbossa has recorded 16 points with four goals and 12 assists. He has recorded 393 points in 530 career AHL games with the Bears, Manitoba Moose, San Diego Gulls, Springfield Thunderbirds, Lake Erie Monsters, and Norfolk Admirals. He has 151 goals and 242 assists in the AHL.
Next up for the Bears is the Atlantic Division Finals which begins Thursday May 11 at 7 p.m. at Giant Center. Game 2 takes place on Saturday. Game 3 next Wednesday. Game 4 is Friday and Game 5 is May 23 of course if necessary. It’s a best three out of five. Sgarbossa hopes to lead the charge.
