Predicting Martin Fehervary’s next contract
The Washington Capitals have reportedly made a qualifying offer to Martin Fehervary. The deadline for NHL teams to do so for their restricted free agents is at the end of June. So around then is probably when the team makes it official unless they just decide to re up him.
This report came from the Slovak media outlet Novy Cas. Negotiations on a new contract are ongoing.
Fehervary told them, translated in English:
“I think I will stay in Washington. I already got a qualifying offer and we started talking about a new contract. We’ll see how it goes.”
The 23 year old is a key part of the defense’s future along with Rasmus Sandin who was acquired at the trade deadline as well as Alex Alexeyev, who was re upped in early May.
Per Puck Pedia, Fehervary is represented by agent and former NHL player Claude Lemieux. He had a cap hit of $791,667 last season as well as an average annual value of $880,000.
I think it’s going to be a two year bridge deal worth two million where the young defenseman will make one million per season. He’s still got a lot of years left in him.
Fehervary made his NHL debut in 2019 and became a fixture on the Caps defense ever since. Over the past two seasons, Fehervary has the second most blocks with 245. He also leads the team with 468 hits over that stretch.
Last season he had six goals and 10 assists for 16 points. Although that was two less goals and one less point than the previous year, Fehervary dealt with an injury that sidelined him for 12 less games than 2021 22.
John Carlson. Martin Fehervary. Nick Jensen. Rasmus Sandin. Alex Alexeyev. Trevor van Riemsdyk. I think that pretty much sums up what the defense will look like this upcoming season.
All that’s left now is for GMBM to get a deal done with Fehervary. Hope we helped.
