The Stanley Cup has been awarded to the Vegas Golden Knights which means we are pretty much now in the beginning of the NHL offseason.

There is still some hockey to be played in the AHL level as the Washington Capitals minor league affiliate Hershey Bears will embark on a winner take all Game 7 tomorrow night.

We’ll have more on that and their Game 6 loss last night in a little bit but in the meantime let’s get caught up on news surrounding the Caps.

Nobody should be surprised that the Capitals are trying to re-sign defenseman Martin Fehervary who’s a young buck with a ton of upside.

Earlier last week, Fehervary revealed to Slovakian outlet Nove Cas that there’s a new contract in the works:

“I think I will stay in Washington. I have already received a qualifying offer and we have started talking about a new contract. We’ll see how it goes.”

Alex Alexeyev, another young defenseman, was the only other restricted free agent entering the Caps offseason. He was re upped in early May and now its Fehervary’s turn to at least get a bridge offer.

Report: Capitals ‘Seriously Aimed’ At Michkov Going Into 2023 NHL Draft; Prospect Told Not To Talk To NHL Teams

(Sammi Silber/The Hockey News)

“Per a Russian report, an expert close to teams says that the Capitals are all in on Michkov going into the draft.”

There are reports out there that the Caps are targeting Russian prospect Matvei Michkov which if he falls to their laps at number eight would be more than a steal. It would be a complete heist. Connor Bedard who?

Silber writes that he is arguably Russia’s top prospect since Alex Ovechkin. A source also told Match.TV that the Caps are “seriously aimed” at taking Michkov.

Three questions facing Caps’ Spencer Carbery following hire

(Matt Weyrich/NBC Sports Washington)

“What’s first on the agenda for Spencer Carbery after being named the Capitals’ new head coach?”

The Caps first big and important move of the offseason already happened when the team hired Spencer Carbery to be their next head coach. But there are still questions facing this upcoming new coaching era.

Questions like who will round out the rest of the coaching staff? There’s at least two more assistant coaching spots needing to be filled as the team not only parted ways with Peter Laviolette but also Kevin McCarthy and Blaine Forsythe.
