Martin Fehervary will be a healthy scratch for the Washington Capitals in tonight’s preseason rematch with the Detroit Red Wings. But I wouldn’t read too much into it.

The preseason has now become an open audition for the sixth defenseman after Joel Edmundson got hurt and will miss four to six weeks as a result of that.

The defensemen that look to be in tonight are Alex Alexeyev, Hardy Haman Aktell, Jon McDonald, Dylan McIlrath, Chase Priskie and Trevor van Riemsdyk.

Fehervary along with TvR are locks to be in the defense on opening night. Guys like Alex Alexeyev are fighting for that sixth spot. This player prediction will round out all the defensemen we’ll predict until we know who that sixth defenseman will be.

The biggest priority of the offseason was finding a new coach and re upping Fehervary. The Caps did both. Now the Marty Party looks to cash in on that new deal.

In his first full NHL season in 2021 22 he was brilliant. Eight goals and nine assists for 17 points. He finished just short of that last season with 16 points with six goals and 10 assists. But the jarring stat from those two seasons was the first season saw him with a plus minus of 15 while last season it was -11.

Fehervary should be on the second pair with Nick Jensen. The latter has missed practice the last couple of days for personal reasons. That shouldn’t mean he’s hurt, maybe Jensen just has something going on with the family.

Predicting Fehervary’s numbers for this season, I could see him with seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points. And his plus minus should be back in the positive category if him and Jensen are a shutdown pair.

More. Capitals head to Detroit for Saturday night rematch. light

With the defensemen all done we’ve got two goalies and several more forwards to predict between now and opening night.
