The Washington Capitals ended their weekend back to back road trip with a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in the shootout behind 28 saves on the night from Darcy Kuemper. Martin Fehervary scored his first goal of the season while Evgeny Kuznetsov won the game in the shootout.

T.J. Oshie did not play last night due to a lower body injury. The Hurricanes thought they struck for a goal in the first period from Brady Skjei but it was waved off due to goalie interference. The first period ended scoreless with shots even at seven apiece.

At 7:41 of the second the Hurricanes struck first and this time it counted from Sebastian Aho. At 11:33 Fehervary scored his first goal of the season. Dylan Strome had a nice spin pass to Tom Wilson who found the defenseman cutting up through the middle. He got the puck and ripped it home.

The score was even at one after two while shots were even at eight in the second period. The Caps were outshot 13-5 in the third period but Kuemper stopped all 13.

In overtime both teams got one shot off but none went in. The Caps were outshot 29-21 overall. The game would go to a shootout. Aho got stopped by Kuemper. Kuznetsov scored with his signature slow motion to the net. He’s probably the best shootout guy on the Caps.

Teuvo Teravainen got stopped by Kuemper. John Carlson got stopped on the other end by Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov. Seth Jarvis was the Hurricanes last hope to keep the game going but Kuemper stopped him to secure the win.
