#1 Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat and Michael Latta
When one thinks of a bad Capitals trade this is pretty much number one on every hockey fan's mind and for good reason. Filip Forsberg was a taltented prospect and the Caps selected him in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft at 11th overall and the team would go on to take Tom Wilson at 16th.
Then an NHL lockout happened. Then the lockout was saved. Yay but that meant shorter season. That short season saw a bizzare trade deadline and Capitals general manager at the time George McPhee decided to make it all the more bizzare. Why was the motivation for the trade? To win the Cup.
It didn't quite work until five years later and by then Brian MacLellan was general manager. But let's go back to that odd year. In that spring of 2013 the Capitals would go on to lose to the New York Rangers in seven games. Then they missed the playoffs completely the season after.
In that stretch Erat scored just two goals in two seasons as a member of the Caps and one of them was an empty netter. And there you have it, the five worst trades of the Caps in franchise history. Here's hoping they don't mess things up this year.
