The Washington Capitals annoucned several plans around town this week to celebrate Alex Ovechkin's achievement of 895 career goals and still counting.
A practice Wednesday for local school kids, a pregame ceremony Thursday and another ceremony Friday are on the docket
This morning the Capitals held a special GR895 Practice where they invited 895 local fourth and fifth graders to celebrate the historic mark. The fourth and fith graders were from five Arlington schools on hand for the practice and they gave Ovi the welcome home he deserved. Ovi would return the favor to the kiddos by redoing the slide he did after he scored the historic goal, a viral sensation indeed among all ages.

On Thursday April 10 prior to the Caps home game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Capitals will hold a Gr8ness pregame ceremony to honor Ovechkin for making history and passing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history. Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, chariman Dick Patrick, and president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan will join Ovechkin's wife Nstya, kids Segei and Ilya, and father in law Kirill to honor Ovechkin.
During the ceremony Ovechkin will receive a special gift from the Leonsis family, the organization, and his teammates. Capitals Monumental Sports Nework play by play voice Joe Beninati will serve as the master of ceremonies.
All fans in atendance will receive a rally towel featuring the image of Ovechkin sliding across the ice as he celebrated the goal. And be sure to stop by the newly named Gr8 King Throne if you're coming to the game located by section 114/115.
Per the press release, the scenery behind the Gr8 Chase Thorne has been updated with a special KING backdrop in honor of Ovi ascending to the top of the NHL goal scoring record.
If you want your hands on 895 fan gear, there's also a special Ovi Shop at Capital One Arena during remaining Caps home games. It opens in conjunction with the doors opening to the arena pregame. It'll also be open from 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. through Saturday April 12.
Located over on 7th Street, the shop features a full collection of merchendise related to Ovechkin, the Gr8 Chase and his newfound status as the NHL goal scoring king. If you can't make it to the game, Monumental Sports Network has you covered with an hour long pregame show prior to the 7:30 p.m. puck drop that'll include the full pregame ceremony honoring Ovechkin.
Finally there will by a city wide celebration in DC over at Union Station from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. called the Gr8 City Celebration. Ovechkin himself will be there. So will Nicklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie, and owner Ted Leonsis.

The indoor event is free and open to the general public and will feature photo opportunities, interactive stations, giveaways, alumni appearances, and more. Union Station also currently houses congraulatory banners in honor of 895.
