Alex Ovechkin is now 10 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's record

The countdown to tie has reached single digits as Alex Ovechkin scored goal number 885 in the Washington Capitals overtime win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden

The Washington Capitals earned a 3-2 come from behind win over the New York Rangers as Tom Wilson won the game in overtime. Leading up to that, it was Alex Ovechkin's third period tally that ignited the comeback at MSG.

Breaking down goal number 885

Off the face off draw with the Capitals on the power play with less than 10 minutes to go and the team trailing 2-1, this wasn't your typical Ovechkin from the office goal. There was a tussle in front of the net and Andrew Mangiapane just barely dished it to Ovechkin for the slam dunk. Ovi did his part and circled around the net and charged at just the right time.

Ovechkin has a current rate of 0.70 goals per game this season and puts him on pace to break Gretzky's record when the Capitals take on the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on April 6. There are 20 games to go in the regular season.

"I think our bench, everyone kind of jumps through the roof whenever he finds the back of the net, which is fitting because he's always the most excited guy on the ice when anybody scores. Ovechkin has 32 goals in 46 games played this season and it was the 1,599th point of his NHL career and his next point will catapult him to becoming the 11th player in NHL history to reach 1,600 points.

It was also Ovechkin's 636th goal in a win, passing Gretzky (635) for the most in NHL history. It was additionally his 32nd career game tying goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation which ties Gretzky for the most in NHL history.

Setting up Mangiapane was Connor McMichael, who played the puck well along the boards follwoing the face off. Ovechkin found the back of the net near that office of the left circle and it was still a one timer off Igor Shesterkin.

The goal would lead to a 3-2 Capitals win thanks to Wilson scoring in overitme and Charlie Lindgren keeping the Caps in the contest the entire contest. Back to Ovechkin, it was his 46th career goal against the New York Rangers. He clearly loves playing in the Garden and he once again put on a show for the red clad Caps fans who made the trip up there.
