Alex Ovechkin will be player to watch against Blackhawks

We've finally reached that point Washington Capitals fans. Alex Ovechkin needs three to go to bypass Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history.

Tonight's game is at 7 p.m. from Capital One Arena where you can catch it on Monumental Sports Network and the NHL Network. You can listen to the game on 106.7 The Fan and Caps Radio 24/7.

Tonight's betting odds per Caesars have the Capitals as 1.5 goal favorites on home ice with -420 moneyline odds. The Chicago Blackhawks will enter the game as underdogs at +320. Tonight's over/under is set at 6.5 goals.

Tonight is the second and final regular season meeting between the Caps and Blackhawks this season and if you're coming to the game all fans are taking home a comemorative 50th Anniversary book. It is also ALL CAPS and the Stanley Cup Era Night which celebrates 2014 to present day.

Wayne Gretzky and Gary Bettman will be in the building tonight. Caps alums expected to appear for the era night include Nicklas Backstrom, Braden Holtby, Brooks Orpik, T.J. Oshie, and Devante Smith-Pelly.

Washington has won the last two games against Chicago at Capital One Arena and have earned at least one point in 12 straigh home games against the Blackhawks dating back to the 2005-06 season, going 10-0-2.

Ovechkin scored his 892nd career goal on Wednesday against the Carolina Hurricanes and has now scored in three straight games. Ovi is three goals shy of passing Wayne Gretzky for the NHL's all-time goals record.

Ovechkin has scored 39 goals in 59 games this season which is good for a 0.66 goals per game pace. He's also notched 17 goals in his last 25 games. At 39 years old, Ovechkin ranks tied for third in the NHL in goals despite missing 16 games due to injury.

Ovechkin is also one goal shy of his NHL record 14th career 40 goal season. Ovechkin can become the first player in NHL history with at least three 40 goal seasons at the age of 35 or older. He is currently one of three players in League history with multiple 40 goal seasons at the age of 35 or older. The other two are Johnny Bucyk in 1970-71 and 1972-73 as well as Teemu Selanne in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
