The Washington Capitals made every single one of their fans happy recently, announcing that captain Alex Ovechkin has signed a one-year extension to continue his playing career through the 2026-27 season.

When asked if he would continue playing past the upcoming season, Ovechkin replied, "I don't know, we'll see."

This response doesn't fully admit that the Capitals will keep their franchise leader for more than just one more season, but it doesn't close the door on a return either.

Ovechkin would go on to speak about how excited he was about the new additions that the Capitals made in the offseason, calling them one of the best teams in the league, showcasing confidence in the changes the team have made this summer.

The Capitals went out and acquired Jordan Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues, acquired and extended Alex Tuch after a sign-and-trade with the Buffalo Sabres, and signed several free agents, including Vincent Desharais, who signed a four-year deal.

Ovechkin, who is 40 years old, is coming off a solid 2025-26 season, where he scored 32 goals and added 32 assists for 64 points through 82 games. Throughout his career, he has scored 929 goals, which is the most in NHL history, as well as 758 assists for 1687 points through 1573 games, which comes out to a 1.07 points-per-game average.

The Capitals will be pushing for their first Stanley Cup since 2018, and they have one of the strongest teams on paper heading into the new season. Ovechkin coming back is a huge boost for the Capitals offensively, and if the Capitals are even close to getting another championship, it's hard to see a world where Ovechkin would wanna go out if the team he has been on for his entire career is just a couple moves away.

We'll see, but the answer on Ovechkin playing in the 2027-28 season wasn't no.
