Hurlbert also has a very strong shot that he can disguise from goalies while also being able to shoot through traffic. While his offensive ability is his main value, some scouts have noted that his skating is not explosive, and he often slows the game down to his pace. While that aspect affects some scouts differently, it can change at the NHL level.
Hurlbert's game is built around his offensive abilities. He is a very high-volume shooter, both in free space and in traffic. Still, the majority of scouting reports focus on his offensive ability rather than his defensive ability, which is his weaker skill. Hurlbert has been ranked as high as 11th overall and as low as 41st, with the majority ranking him in the mid-20s. The Capitals are no strangers to having an offensive-minded forward, as they have had the greatest NHL goalscorer on their team for 20+ seasons.
While it may be a reach for the Capitals to take Hurlbert at the 18th pick, his offensive mind and shooting ability may make it hard for the Capitals to pass on him. If they want to help develop another offensive-minded winger, Hurlbert is the guy for them. While there is no guarantee he will be available for the Capitals at either the 16th or 18th pick if they want to add to their offensive game, Hurlbert is a strong addition for the Capitals if they choose to draft him.
