Capitals crush Flyers in opening game of Frozen Frenzy
Washington once again took over Philly just like last year in Game 82
The Washington Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 in what was a jam packed day of hockey with ESPN's Frozen Frenzy. There weren't any goals from Tom Wilson but other players stepped up.
In the first period the tone was set early with some shorthanders. First it was Nic Dowd from Martin Fehervary then it was Andrew Mangiapane from Connor McMichael at 3:49 and 15:07 respectively.
Nobody scored in the second period. 34 seconds into the third Travis Sanheim struck for the Flyers. John Carlson answered right back 64 seconds later with the assists coming from Connor McMichael and Dylan Strome.
Jakob Chychrun then struck for his second of the season at 14:07 with assists coming from Brandon Duhaime and Jakub Vrana. It marked Vrana's 100th career assist and speaking of 100's it was also the 100th win over the Flyers.
Chychrun was asked by Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post about the goal:
"I was just trying to do a quick train and get to the airplane faster, get home here. I was trying to be funny, I guess. Didn't work, boys left me hanging."
He was talking about his goal celly which he missed his teammates on the ice hugging and instead hugged his teammates on the bench. A good and hilarious hug me brother moment.
In the winning effort Charlie Lindgren made 17 saves while Logan Thompson will get his turn on Wednesday night as the Caps and Flyers play once again in a back to back.
Tonight, it started with our penalty kill. We did a really good job of killing their time and space and then finding a way... we got two penalty kill goals tonight. When they're doing that, your penalty kill is doing things right.
In the same article, John Tortorella wasn't pleased as the Flyers have just one goal in their last two games after losing 3-0 in their home opener on Saturday to sink their record to 1-4-1.
I think that the biggest key is there's a frustration level. They want to play well. They want to win a hockey game. They want to score a goal in the home building. You can't let the frustration turn into cheating. You can't forget about your structure as we're going through this.
Caps and Flyers go at it again this time on TNT, truTV, and MAX. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. from Capital One Arena.
