Capitals drop Sunday evening contest to Hurricanes
In a contest between two hot teams in the Metropolitan Division, the Caps fell short
The Washington Capitals fell to the Carolina Hurricanes by a final of 4-2 from Lenovo Center in Raleigh. Dmitry Orlov scored twice for the Hurricanes which is a weird sentence to type but we're used to it.
Orlov got it started at 14:01 on a wrist shot in the first period. Alex Ovechkin would knot the score up with a power play strike for his seventh goal of the season at 19:16. John Carlson and Dylan Strome had the assists and it put Ovechkin 35 goals behind Wayne Gretzky with the 860th of his career.
At 19:49 Brandon Duhaime gave the Caps the lead off a feed from Nic Dowd for his second goal of the season. From that point on, the Hurricanes took over.
In the second period Martin Necas struck at 2:29. Orlov followed at 5:26. In the third period Andrei Svechnikov scored on an empty netter. For the Canes it was their sixth win in a row. Charlie Lindgren was good in net, making 40 stops. Ovechkin additionally has five goals in four games.
Give them credit, they're a really good hockey team. They're well coached. They got a lot of guys that clearly got a lot of speed, a lot of skill. They put a lot of pressure on our defense and it's tough breaking pucks out against those guys. It's a tough building to play in but yeah it was a good hockey game.
Nic Dowd added, "They're a good team to be honest. It's a tough building to play and we've had a lot of history against each other since I've been here. It's always been a war. They're a high shot volume team."
Dowd would say on the play of Charlie Lindgren, "He played incredible tonight. I know he's going to be upset at himself but I thought he was our best player. He gave us a chance to succeed in that game. Going into the third, down by one against a tough team in a tough building on a back to back - thought we put ourselves in a good spot."
The Caps will be off on Monday, will practice on Tuesday before taking on the Nashville Predators on Wednesday Nov. 6 from Capital One Arena.
