The Washington Capitals’ ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, announced recently that they have signed defenseman Luke Prokop and forward Josh Prokop to contracts for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
Interestingly, they are the fourth pair of brothers signed in the Capitals’ organization, joining Dylan and Matt Strome, Ilya and Aliaksei Protas, and twins Adam and Justin Hall, who also signed with the Stingrays this summer.
Luke, who was originally selected by the Nashville Predators originally selected in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft, spent the 2025-26 season with the Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League (AHL).
In 42 games with the Condors, he scored three goals and added eight assists for 11 points.
Josh played in Denmark last season with the Herning Blue Fox, where he scored 17 goals and added 19 assists for 36 points through 47 games.
The two haven’t played together since they were on the same team in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Calgary Hitmen in the 2020-21 season.
Both Josh and Luke are from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Josh spent time at the University of Alberta between the 21-22 and 24-25 seasons, with two of them as their captain.
In those four seasons, Josh played 104 games, scoring 53 goals and adding 60 assists for 113 points, maintaining just over a point-per-game average.
Luke, who is the younger of the two brothers, has both AHL and ECHL experience. Through 63 ECHL games, he has scored six goals and added 23 assists for 29 points. Through 82 AHL games, he has scored four goals and added 13 assists for 17 points.
In 2021, Luke made history by becoming the first player under an NHL contract to come out as gay and was also the first gay player to play in the AHL.
Luke also won a WHL championship in the 2021-22 season with the Edmonton Oil Kings and was named the WHL’s Humanitarian of the Year.
This will be Josh’s second full season of professional hockey, and it will be Luke’s fourth.
