Capitals get shutout by Lightning 3-0
They played good but the result wasn't good
The Washington Capitals fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0 on Saturday night from Florida. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves in the victory for the Bolts which ended the Caps five game winning streak. Mitchell Chaffee scored at 5:27 in the second period.
In the third the Bolts tacked on two more off of Charlie Lindgren with goals from Brayden Point and Conor Geekie. Those came at 2:26 and 3:10 respectively. Nikita Kucherov would get a point in his eighth straight game for the Lightning.
Despite the loss the Caps didn't play terrible. They put up 8-7 shots in the first period while outshooting the Bolts 17-8 in the middle period while having the edge in the third at 7-6. 32-21 Caps was the number in shots overall.
Vasilevskiy would tell Corey Long of NHL.com:
They had a couple of shots from the blue line. The guys did a great job in front of boxing out. Some oof the plays like J.J. (Moser) did in the third period, the great back check on (Alex Ovechkin). I don't want to see that in the third...'Ovi' all alone in front. Great job by everyone."
Lindgren on the other end would make 18 saves in the defeat. Caps coach Spencer Carbery added, "I thought we played a good game. Territorial we were OK. ... They've got a good team and they've got a top six that's as good as anybody in the NHL, so they are going to get you on your heels for a couple of sequences. But overall we created a ton of good looks. Just didn't make that play that we needed to make, couldn't make that last play."
The Capitals are back in action next on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN when they host the New York Rangers from Capital One Arena. The month will end with a home game on Halloween night against the Montreal Canadiens.
