Capitals management "has a pretty good level of understanding" of where things are trending with Alex Ovechkin

Fans are waiting anxiously to hear whether Alex Ovechkin will retire or not, and while nothing was announced, it seems as though management has a pretty good level of understanding of where things are trending for him.

The Washington Capitals are waiting patiently for their captain, Alex Ovechkin, to announce whether he will be returning for the 2026-27 season or retiring. While fans are anxiously waiting for his response either way, it seems as though management "has a pretty good level of understanding" of where things are tending with him.

In a recent article from RMNB, it was mentioned that management seems to know which way things are going to go.

In the article, Ian Oland writes, "Where things are trending is ambiguous, but judging by past comments from Ovechkin and other available context, the reporting seems to suggest that the front office anticipates the captain returning for the 2026-27 season."

Oland continued, "Ovechkin has been noticeably keeping himself in good shape as he ponders his future, playing padel and hitting the weight room with his wife, Nastya, and close friend Gus."

They also mentioned a report from Pierre LeBrun, who said that the Capitals' front office “has kept the lines of communication open with [Ovechkin] since the end of the season, and there’s a pretty good level of understanding of where things are trending, but everyone involved just wants to make sure No. 8 is 100 percent sure before committing to his decision, either way.”

At the end of the day, Ovechkin still has time to decide on his future, but things seem to be trending towards a return for the 2026-27 season, where he will look to win one more Stanley Cup before he hangs up his skates.

There were previous reports that the Capitals had a plan for if Ovechkin decided to retire, and another plan for if he decided to return. Considering the Capitals have been fairly quiet up to this point, it's possible that they are under the impression Ovechkin will return for one final season, but nothing is official yet.
