Capitals notch first win of the season over Golden Knights
Finally a big win
It took a minute but the Washington Capitals finally got their first win of the NHL season. Albeit it was just their second game the lengthy wait still felt worth it considering other teams already played their second game about a week ago.
The Caps would get a 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights featuring an outburst of goals in the second period and Alex Ovechkin getting to 700 career assists.
Another storyline was Jakub Vrana appearing in his first Caps game since 2021 and he struck at 6:02 off a feed from Andrew Mangiapane for the 1-0 lead.
It felt great. You got to give a lot of credit to (Mangiapane). That was a great forecheck. He won that puck battle and he served it to me... I'm happy that one went in. It felt amazing.
Victor Olofsson answered with a goal at 17:49 on the power play. After that 1-1 tie in the opening period the outburst of Caps goals happened.
Tom Wilson gave the Caps the lead for good at 3:06 with a PPG. Dylan Strome and Ovechkin assisted there. Aliaksei Protas made it 3-1 with a goal up the middle with Ovi setting him up. That was number 700.
Jakob Chychrun would then score at 6:13 with Nic Dowd and John Carlson providing the assists. It was his first goal as a member of the Caps.
Jack Eichel would score at 7:17 for Vegas to round out the scoring. For the Caps they got good goaltending from a former Golden Knight in Logan Thompson as the netminder made 24 saves.
It was kind of a long week for the family so this game had a lot of meaning in it in a lot of different ways. So I appreciate the guys coming out and working hard.
Jakob Chychrun added this about Thompson
We were really happy for him. That game meant a lot to him. He played a heckuva game. We had a couple of breakdowns that are going to happen. And he was able to really hold the fort down and keep us in it.
Next up for the Caps is a Thursday night matchup with the Dallas Stars to round out the season opening homestand.
