Cole Hutson is expected to be a huge piece of the Washington Capitals' success this season, with huge expectations coming off a strong showing last season, but it seems as though his mind remains on finishing his degree at Boston University (BU), where he previously played.
Hutson was at the recent NHLPA Rookie Showcase and mentioned that he missed his teammates and still keeps in touch with them, but is enjoying the next phase of his career. Hutson had joked that his major was hockey.
"I'm still texting with the guys every day. I miss them a lot," Hutson said. "I'll be back there next year for summer going, going to try to finish."
Hutson also mentioned that he will continue to follow the BU Terriers while playing for the Capitals, saying, "Just be as supportive as you can, treat it like you're still there, be its biggest fan," about BU.
Hutson played two seasons with the Terriers in the NCAA, picking up 70 points in 74 games. Last season, he scored three goals and added seven assists for 10 points through 14 games with the Capitals.
Hutson also played three games with Team USA at the U20 World Junior Championship, where he scored one goal and added three assists for four points.
At the showcase, several prominent rookies around the NHL shared their belief in Hutson winning the Calder Trophy, which is awarded to the league's best rookie.
Vegas Golden Knights' prospect Trevor Connolly predicted Hutson would win "for sure," and Andrew Cristall, also a Capitals prospect, said that he thought it would come down to either Hutson or Porter Martone.
Martone also showed support for Hutson. "You saw what Cole did last year going up," Martone said.
Hutson and the Capitals get underway on October 2nd, 2026, on the road against the Carolina Hurricanes.
