The Washington Capitals made some noise this morning in the form of a transaction to the roster as the team recalled Mike Sgarbossa from the Hershey Bears of the AHL while placing Matt Roy on IR, said senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick.

The 32 year old has recorded nine points with a goal and eight assists in seven games with the Bears which is his seventh season with the team. Her eight assists lead Hershey and are the second most in the AHL.

Sgarbossa would record seven points in 25 games with four goals and three assists in 2023-24 which set an NHL single season career high in goals and tying his career high in points. Sgarbossa also appeared in 44 games with Hershey regisering 43 points with seven gaols and 36 assists while ranking first on the Bears in points per game with 0.98.

Sgarbossa recorded 58 points with 21 goals and 37 assists in 60 regular season games with the Bears in 2022-23 leading the Bears in assists, points, and power play assists with 16. His 58 points marked his highest single season point total since 2018-19 where he had 65 points in 75 games, his first season with the Bears. The six foot, 192 pound center also recorded 37 asssits which marked a career high.

In 269 games with the Bears, Sgarbossa has recorded 246 points with 87 goals and 159 assists. The Campbellville, Ontario native has appeared in 42 games with the Capitasl since the 2019-20 season, recording 13 points with six goals and seven assists and a plus five plus/minus rating.

In 90 career NHL games with the Capitals, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks and Colorado Avalanche, Sgarbossa has recorded 23 points with eight goals and 15 assists. Sgarbossa has recorded 445 points with 159 goals and 286 assists in 581 career games with the Bears, Manitoba Moose, San Diego Gulls, Springfield Thunderbirds, Lake Erie Monsters, and Norfolk Admirals.

As for Matt Roy he had a -2 as he exited opening night with a lower body injury missing the last six games. He can be activated at any time on his own but has yet to join the team.

Roy was acquired on the opening day of free agency from the Los Angeles Kings. He had five goals and 20 assists for 25 points last season.
