Capitals score four times in third period to take Game 4 over Canadiens

Four goals in the third was the difference and now the Washington Capitals are up three games to one

The Washington Capitals defeated the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 to go up 3-1 in the first round series. 5-2 was the final score as the Caps scored four straight goals in the third period after trailing 2-1.

Heading back to DC with the Caps on the brink of advancing

The first period was scoreless as the Caps led in shots 6-5. The second period saw the Caps lead in shots 11-4. Dylan Strome would put the Caps in front with a backhanded goal at 1:25 set up by Anthony Beauvillier.

Juraj Slafkovsky tied ti at 10:33 with a power play goal. Cole Caufield would then strike on the power play at 18:32 to give the Habs a 2-1 lead.

At 6:39 in the third period Brandon Duhaime would tie it. It was a good play in front and it was set up by Jakob Chychrun and Trevor van Riemsdyk.

At 16:23 a shot from Andrew Mangiapane gave the Caps the lead for good. Strome and van Riemsdyk had the helpers. Duhaime added his second of the night with an empty netter assisted by Nic Dowd at 17:21.

Then Tom Wilson added an empty net goal off a feed from Connor McMichael at 19:05. Shots were even at nine apiece in the third period while Washignton had the edge in shots 26-18 overall.

There's accountability when you're down in tough moments that you just want to pull for the guy next to you and you want to go ou there and get it done, and it's just a really cool thing when it can be any guy. Logan Thompson, who left Game 3 with an injury after colliding with Strome, made 16 saves in Game 4's winning effort. Montreal went 2 for 4 on the power play while the Caps went 0 for 5.
