While the Washington Capitals have added a ton of new firepower this summer, one player has become available that they should have no issue trying to bring in.
In a recent article from Daria Tuboltseva of RG, it was revealed that a trade involving Kirill Marchenko is imminent. Tuboltseva wrote, "Kirill Marchenko is expected to be traded by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the near future, according to a source close to the Russian forward, even as talks appear to be picking back up after a summer of mixed signals."
Tuboltseva continued, "Kirill is essentially between two teams right now," a source close to the player told RG.org. "The parties are now negotiating the terms of the trade."
It was revealed that two teams were involved in a potential trade involving Marchenko, with the Montreal Canadiens being one of them. Marchenko, who is 26 years old, has one season left on his current contract and is expected to get a massive raise on his next deal. While the Capitals would have to move out some money, it should be a no-brainer for them to move out assets to land Marchenko.
Last season, Marchenko scored 27 goals and added 40 assists for 67 points through 76 games with the Blue Jackets. Throughout his career, he has scored 102 goals and added 106 assists for 208 points through 292 games.
He is an elite all-around player that every team in the league should be looking at landing if the Blue Jackets have truly made him available. Trading out Ethen Frank and Anthony Beauvillier, while adding whatever it takes to land Marchenko, including prospects and draft picks, would make the Capitals one of the strongest teams in the entire league on paper.
It seems like a trade is imminent, and time will tell where Marchenko ends up to start the 2026-27 seaosn, but the Capitals should be checking in.
