Capitals to Sign Malkin? No Way

Evgeny Malkin will not be playing for the Washington Capitals next season no matter what anyone says.

The other day, former Pittsburgh Penguin Tyler Kennedy said he believes that Evgeny Malkin will sign with the Washington Capitals next season, joining Alex Ovechkin for Ovi’s “final” season. Let’s get the easy part out of the way first. Evgeny Malkin is NOT going to play for the Washington Capital next season. Let’s get that out of the way right now. Personal feelings aside, it just doesn’t make sense. While not as hated as other players currently (and previously) who wear black and gold, Malkin is still a Penguin. He always will be. To suggest otherwise is pure fantasy.

Here are three reasons Malkin will NOT be in a Capitals sweater in October or any other month:

He’s too old: While Malkin is certainly one of the greatest players to ever lace’em up in the NHL and has his name on the Cup three times, he is the opposite of the kind of player the Washington are looking to add. The Capitals want a top six forward, with their eye on skilled players that are younger and faster. Malkin is neither of those.

He’s too expensive: Malkin won’t come cheap. If Ovi signed an extension two years ago for $9.5 million, and Crosby is in talks to extend for around the same, then Geno to DC is dead on arrival. This will most likely be Malkin’s last “big” contract, meaning closer to $10 million per year for one year, two years. The Caps could use that money to trade for Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou, or Jason Robertson, not an aging former Penguin.

We don’t want him! He’s also a Capitals killer. Malkin has 82 points in 67 career regular games against Washington. In the playoffs, he has 22 points (7goals and 15 assists) in 24 games, 3 game winning goals, and a hattrick. We are just supposed to forgive him and let him help Ovi get another Cup? No thanks. We would never hear the end of it from Pens fans.
