The Washington Capitals have acquired Justin Sourdif from the Florida Panthers on Thursday night, the evening before the NHL Draft.
In the deal the Caps sent the Panthers a seocnd round pick in 2026 and a sixth rounder in 2027.
The 23 year old forward recorded an AHL career high 34 points in 43 games with the Charlotte Checkers with 16 goals and 18 assists.
Listed at 5'11" and 181 pounds, Sourdif ranked fifth on Charlotte in goals and sixth in points despite appearing in just 43 games. He had a scoring rate of 0.79 points per game, which was the second highest on the team among skaters with at least 20 games played.
A naive out of Richmond, British Colmbia he also raked tied for second on the Checkes in game winning goals with four and tied for third in power play assits with eight and penalty minutes with 58.
During Charlotte's run to the Calder Cup Finals, Sourdif ranked third on the eam in scoring with 10 points with four goals and 10 assists in 18 postseason games and tied for the team lead in game winning goals with two.
Four of Sourdif's 10 points came in the Calder Cup Finals where Charlotte fell in six games to the Abbotsford Canucks.
He was originally drafted by Florida in the third round at 87th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft scoring his first career NHL goal in his lone appearance with the Panthers in 2024-25 on Feb. 25 at the Nashville Predators.
In 2023-24 Sourdiff recorded an AHL career high 38 points with 12 goals and 26 assits in 58 games with Charlotte and his 38 points ranked fourth on the Checkers while his 26 assists ranked third.
Sourdif also played three games with the Panthers in 2023-24 and made his NHL debut on Oct. 16, 2023 at the New Jersey Devils.
In 149 career AHL games with Charlotte, Sourdif has recorded 96 points with 35 goals and 61 assists. He has registered one goal and a plus one plus/mins rating in four career NHL games with Florida.
Sourdif also played five seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Vancouver Giants and the Edmonton Oil Kings recording a total of 205 points in 199 games with 86 goals and 119 assists.
On an international level he earned a silver medal with Canada at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup as he registered five points with a goal and four assits in five games.
This is a good depth move and he was a beast in the Calder Cup Playoffs. He could be decent in the NHL too.
