Last Thoughts on the World Championships
I wasn’t In Zürich Monday when Ryan Leonard scored his first World Championship goal, a powerplay goal in the USA’s 6-2 loss to Finland yesterday. I tried all kinds of things to extend my stay to see the game on Monday afternoon. It wasn’t possible. Zürich is a beautiful city and has some amazing restaurants. I would have loved to have stayed a bit longer to see Leonard make a little bit of history.
I also didn’t have the chance to see Team Canada and Coach Carbs, who are tearing up the tournament so far and are 3-0. I would have loved to have gone to more games, but Sunday was the only game I could get to on such short notice. My trip was last minute, and I threw it together last Friday evening and Saturday morning before I left on Saturday for Zürich. Not knowing what to expect, I just decided to wing it. It would have been great to watch a couple of hockey games almost everyday for two weeks straight. That’s just sounds incredible. ...and expensive. Switzerland is not cheap. But it is a great host for these kind of tournaments, in my opinion.
I will plan better for next time. I treated this year as a scouting mission to prepare for the 2027 World Championships next year, which will be held in Mannheim and Düsseldorf in Germany. While still a year away, I will be a little more flexible and can get to see a couple a few more games. Of course, my hope is that I will NOT see any Capitals playing next year in the World Championships as they will all still be (hopefully) too busy in the Stanley Cup

In case you missed it, you can read the first in a series where I examine Jason Robertsson as a possible Capitals’ 2026 Offseason Trade Targets for trhe Caps. I dug through the rumor mill to breakdown other players who may be available, who might interest the Caps, and how much the Capitals might have to give up in a trade.
