The Washington Capitals have traded defenseman Declan Chisholm to the New Jersey Devils for a 4th round draft pick in the 2027 draft. According to Monumental Sports Network’s Tarik el-Bashir, Chisholm requested a trade so he could find more playing time. Chisholm was the Capitals seventh defenseman, playing in only 26 games for Washington last season, finishing the year with 1 goal and 6 assists.

Chisholm was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the 5th round of the 2018 NHL draft. He played parts of two season with the Jets before he was traded to Minnesota. The Caps signed Chisholm before last season to a two-year, $3.2 million dollar contract.

With the trade of Chisholm and Lapierre, the Caps now have more than $14 million in available salary cap space. They will have to address their blueline, especially now that Chisholm is in New Jersey and Rasmus Sandin will be out until sometime in 2027. They only have six defensemen under contract for the 2026-27 season.

NOTES:

The Chisholm trade is the fourth in three days for Caps general manager Chris Patrick. He has so far shipped out Connor McMichael, Hendrix Lapierre, and now Chisholm. They have added Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, and three draft picks. The Caps now have 9 draft picks in the 2027 draft, which is could be a deep one. The Caps have only four picks in the draft this weekend and could package some of those newly acquired picks to trade into the 2nd or 3rd round which take place tomorrow.

Caps new forward Jordan Kyrou will wear #25 for the Capitals. He wore the same number for the St. Louis Blues.
