The 2026 NHL Draft Lottery is tonight! The sixteen teams that failed to make the Stanley Cup playoffs will all watch some balls ping-pong bounce around a hopper. Who will move up in the draft order this June? Who will win the first overall pick? The Capitals will most likely pick sixteenth with the first of their two first rounders this year (the other came from Anaheim in the John Carlson trade.) This potentially gives the Capitals two picks in the top eighteen this year, depending how the Ducks finish their season.

While some experts have rated this draft as a diverse draft, the Capitals will be hoping to find another Vladimir Taraenko (no. 16 to St Louis in 2010) or Tom Wilson (no. 16 to DC in 2012.) They could really use a number one center or defenseman like Keaton Verhoeff would be pretty happy to find an offensive center like Caleb Malhotra Caleb Malhotra or a stud defensive prospect like Keaton Verhoeff. Where they land in the top half of the draft will be determined at 7pm ET tonight.

Washington could move up to the No. 6 or No. 7 pick. If they win the first or second lottery drawing, they can move up no more than ten spots. So even thought they can't win the top pick, the sixth or seventh pick will be more valuable. Winning a pick at the top of the draft could change the trajectory of the Capitals offseason plans. With their reboot closer to completion, that first rounder can help the Caps accomplish something Caps general manager Chris Patrick has stated for over a year.

If Patrick follows through on his expressed desire to trade for a top six forward, a draft pick in the top ten would be much more valuable than a pick in the middle of the round. It could be packaged with other assets for a player rumored to be on the trade block. Maybe Auston Matthews, Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou, and Jason Robertson are easy to get. Now that Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have been eliminated, might he be someone the Capitals could use their plethora of picks and prospects to make a deal?

So, while it might be boring tonight for fans Rocking the Red, there is still a small chance that things bounce amore exciting way.Watch the NHL Draft Lottery tonight at 7pm ET, on ESPN, being televised live for the first time. I’ll be watching to see if the Caps get any lucky bounces. Washington teams haven’t had much luck in draft lotteries over the years. I am not holding out hope that a miracle could happen. Maybe the Hockey Gods will smile on DC tonight.
