DC turns out for Alex Ovechkin celebration at Capital One Arena

The Washington Capitals and the city of DC continued to honor the Great Eight

As Alex Ovechkin exited a stage featuring the very goal net he scored on in Long Island to become the new NHL's goal scoring leader, Nicklas Backstrom had a crazy idea and it quickly went viral. He brought up an actual goat and Ovi posed with the photo op.

The Washington Capitals honored their captain with the ultimately party on Friday to put a stamp on Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky. There was plenty of 895 memorabilia, and an on stage presentation featuring plenty of speakers. There was a goat exhibit as well to celebrate the NHL's newest Greatest Of All Time, but we always knew he was the GOAT.

Hosted by Monumental Sports Network's Tarik El-Bashir and Alan May, Ovechkin took stage with family and friends as well as Backstrom and T.J. Oshie. "It's unbelievable," Ovechkin said in front of about 3,000 fans mostly decked out in number 8 jerseys.

As remarkable as the individual acheivement is, Ovechkin still credits his teammates.

Ovi was presented with an official resolution from the D.C. Council celebrating the historic achievement and the day of April 6, 2025 which will go down in the history books forever.

Owner Ted Leonsis was also on stage to talk about Ovechkin and how he transformed the city of Washington and on the very stage he signed a 13 year extension back in 2008, the 39 year old captain joked he wanted to sign another 13 year deal.

Ovechkin was emotional through it all and left the stage while holding the baby goat to the chants of "Ovi, Ovi, Ovi" and the classic song he uses when he scores goals, Shake Rattle and Roll by Big Joe Turner as he left.
