Several former Capitals are leading candidates for head coaching vacancies in the NHL this offseason, but one is being denied the opportunity which could lead chaos in this coaching cycle.

I remember back in 2002 when Caps general manager George McPhee hiredminor league coaching phenom Bruce Cassidy to coach the Caps. McPhee could see that Butch was going to make a great coach some day and figured why not take the chance. Cassidy did okay in DC, but was fired after during the 2003-04 season as the wheels came off. He earned his way back into the NHL coaching ranks in 2013-14 with Boston, where he won coach of the year in 2020. Cassidy ended up in Vegas (where McPhee is team president) in 2022-23 and he coached them to their first Cup. Despite being an annual contender since and having qualified for the playoffs, Vegas shocked the hockey world when they fired Cassidy  with eight games left in the season to hire John Torterella. Talk about a gut punch!

Butch had successful stints in Boston and Vegas and is a hot commodity. But Vegas has denied Edmonton and Los Angeles from interviewing Cassidy. Maybe it’s just Vegas’ way of keeping Cassidy from moving to a rival in the Pacific division. Maybe Vegas lets him talk with clubs in the Eastern Conference. His style may be exactly what Toronto is looking for in a coach.
