Four Things The Caps Must Address For Next Season

The Washington Capitals will have to address these a number of things this summer via trade or free agency if they want to make a run at the Stanley Cup in 2026-27.

A Top Four Defensemen

... or two. The Capitals need a right-shot defenseman and powerplay QB. Hey, John Carlson will be a free agent! I think there’s a real shot the Caps could resign Carlson this summer. Carlson is right-handed, is a pillar in the community and a franchise legend. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking. The Caps may decide to pursue some other options, like Darren Raddysh, Rasmus Anderson, or Jacob Trouba. With Rasmus Sandin most likely out to start next season as he recovers from knee surgery**, it wouldn’t hurt to find a second D-man. Logan Stanley would be a HUGE option if the Sabres don’t resign him. I can see the Caps going for a lesser known, more affordable, but reliable and steady rearguard like Mario Ferraro from San Jose.
