The Washington Capitals will have to address these a number of things this summer via trade or free agency if they want to make a run at the Stanley Cup in 2026-27.

Back-Up Goalie

The Capitals had one of the best starting goaltenders the last two years in Logan Thompson. There back-up goaltending wasn't up to par this past season. I love Charlie Lindgren. He’s a great hockey story, a good goalie, a great teammate, and a fan favorite. However, he didn’t play that well this year and sported a 3.52 GAA and a .879 save percentage. Ouch. The Caps need more from their no. 2 goalie. Lindgren isn’t to blame for the Capitals missing the playoffs, but better play from the back-up goalie would have made a difference. Clay Stevenson played well in relief this year; he might be ready. The Capital’s will have to look at who is available on the free agent market or make a trade.
