The Washington Capitals defeated the Montreal Canadiens in five games. Lets grade the offense and the defense as well as the goaltending. We'll start with the defense who was excellent in front of Logan Thompson.
Here's how the defense lined up for much of the series including Game 5:
Jakob Chychrun - John Carlson
Matt Roy - Rasmus Sandin
Alex Alexeyev - Trevor van Riemsdyk
For Matt Roy and Rasmus Sandin their combined corsi for in the postseason is at 44.65 percent, their expected goals for percentage at 48.44 percent and their high danger chances for percentage at 47.62 percent.
For John Carlson and Jakob Chychrun their combined corsi for percenage was at 43.71 percent while their expected goals for percentage was at 46.24 percent and their high danger chances for percentage is at 47.22 percent.
Finally there's Trevor van Riemsdyk and Alex Alexeyev. Their combined corsi for percentage was at 53.01 percent while their expected goals for percentage was at 41 percent and their high danger chances for percentage is at 72.22 percent.
In Game 1 the Caps had 19 blocked shots and 42 hits. In Game 2 the Caps had 37 hits and 24 blocked shots. Game 3 defeat saw the Caps have 26 hits and 19 blocked shots.
In Game 4 the Caps had 26 hits and 12 blocked shots. In the Game 5 clincher the Caps had 29 hits and 23 blocked shots.
Jakob Chychrun would have a huge goal in Game 5 to double the Caps lead. He spoke about that which was set up by Pierre-Luc Dubois.
"It's a great play. I know he's a high end player that wants to make plays and I just try to find seams for him, I try to get open. That was just a play where I exploited an opening and he made a heck of a pass. "Jakob Chychrun
Grade A: Overall the defense did good and it did their job in the series to wrap this up in five games. Adding Jakob Chychrun over the offseason only bolstered the blue line and we're now seeing the results.
