Ovechkin got goal number 889 in the defeat which was set up by Trevor van Riemsdyk winning a puck battle near the half wall, dishing it to Aliaksei Protas and setting up the Great Eight in his office for the game tying goal to force overtime.
For TvR it was his 19th assist of the season which added to his already career high and brought his season point total to 20. He has recorded four points in his last five games and became the sixth Capitals defenseman to reach the 20 point mark this season.
It marked the first time in frachise history the Capitals had six defensemen with 20 or more points in the same season and the Caps are the fourth team since 2000 with six defensemen with 20 plus points which joins the 2022-23 New York Islanders, 2021-22 Minnesota Wild and 2006-07 Ottawa Senators.
Caps defensemen have combined for 184 points this season with 34 goals and 150 assists which is the second highest total in the NHL. Last season, Washington ranked 30th in the NHL in scoring by a defensemen with just 135 points.
As for Ovechkin, he carries a five game point streak into Thursday's game against the Wild with three goals and four assists. It matches his longest streak of the season and tonight he gets to play in front of a national TV audience as he tries to get closer to NHL history.
