Kim Keheler, a senior property manager at Washington Harbour received a phone call from security during her work day that a group of men were swimming in the fountain. She at first requested the group of men be removed until she found out it was just simply the Washington Capitals celebrating their Stanley Cup win from a couple nights prior.
Seven years after that fountain swim heard across the DMV and the Summer of Ovi, the Cup win, whatever you want to call it, Washington Harbour unveiled a plaque that comemorated the epic celebration of that team and the festivities that came as the Caps celebrated with the people of DC.
The plaque even reads these simple words
"In Vegas, they became champions. Here, they became legends."
"This is a spot that we're all aware of," a smiling Nicklas Backstrom said who was on hand with T.J. Oshie to help unveil the plaque and mingle with other Caps fans. But per Sammi Silber of The Hockey News, it was T.J. Oshie's idea in the first place for swimming in the fountains. Oshie said this:
"We were all waiting to get some beverages over there, and I don't know how hot it was, but it felt like it was scorching outside. Obviously with all the fans around and all the guys kind of in a tight area, it was getting a little warm. I just had a little idea to jump in the fountain, and tried to grab all the guys I could. "T.J. Oshie
Oshie would initially think that the fountians were a couple feet deep only to find out it was just a couple of inches deep. Still though, they captured the moment and as we all know it went viral on social media.
Oshie added, "It was a fun moment... it's a special fountain for sure."
The plaque will be there forever so be sure to check it out next time you're in the Washington Harbour.
