3 Capitals who may likely be playing their final game soon
We'll get this in now but it can change at anytime in under a month
This just happened. Matthew Phillips has been claimed by the Pittsburgh Penguins, per Elliotte Friedman, after the Washington Capitals placed him on waivers. With the Caps playing at the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow night there could be more moving parts between now and March 8 which is trade deadline day.
The Caps held a practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex and Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reported that Sonny Milano is on track to play so that waiver move was to make room for him. He's been on IR since Dec. 14 with an upper body injury. Milano skated with Max Pacioretty with Mike Sgarbossa.
#3 Max Pacioretty?
If there's one good thing about this relationship between Max Pacioretty and the Caps is that at the very least the relationship lasted a little bit longer than Dwight Howard and the Wizards. But since January Patches has done a decent job on the top six.
The reason the Caps could potentially shop him is both his age right now which is 35 and when you're 35 an up your career is winding down whether you like it or not. The rumor has it that the Caps could shop Pacioretty and he could go to a winning team. The other rumor is that it could be the Golden Knights but what do we know?
#2 Anthony Mantha
This trade could be a hit or miss but no better time than now with the way Anthony Mantha has heated up. He upped his trade value with his 16 goal season and if the Caps have to eat his salary or pay the bulk of it, a playoff contender could use Mantha's services at a bargain.
After all, this is the best version of Mantha that a team is going to get.
Oh he's slow? Well not according to NHL Edge which puts Mantha 78 percent over the average top skating speed in 22.75 miles per hour. There was a reason on the first day of training camp that he passed the whole skate test by being ahead of the competition.
He got some help off the ice and made adjustments to his training over the summer and now it's paid dividends. At the most Mantha has had 211 18-20 mph bursts and 88 20-22 mph bursts. That has him within the top below 50 percentile in the league.
#1 Joel Edmundson
This has been a rumor for a while but witht the defense being questionable at times the Caps could possibly get something done. It seems like Ethan Bear has done a good job at seizing the opportunity. Same with Rasmus Sandin. I don't see either of them going anywhere.
Joel Edmundson has one goal and two assists for three points in 36 games. Perhaps the Caps could deal him since they signed him in free agency but ended up barely playing.
For comparing Bear already has three points in 16 gaems and was a big midseason prize.
