When you think about Aliaksei Protas of the Washington Capitals you know that fans are split on whether or not his midseason extension was worth it. That question we'll try our best to answer on today's report card.
Protas finished up with six goals and 23 assists for 29 points along with a plus/minus of -3 along with eight penalty minutes, 112 shots and one game winning goal. And yes he suited up in all four Stanley Cup playoff games against the Rangers and had two assists to boot.
In Hershey last season
Many think the 2019 draftee was going to be a big and physcial center that could also play on the left. It worked in Hershey last summer and it led them to their 12th Calder Cup title. Protas had five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 20 games that summer while in the regular season he added five points in nine games.
Advanced stats
Per Natural Stat Trick, Protas finished with a corsi for percentage of 48.65 percent along with a 50.91 percent expected goals for percentage plus a high danger chances for percentage of 50.71 percent during the regular season at five on five play. In the four playoff games at five on five Protas had a corsi for percentage of 51 percent, a 62.49 percent expected goals for percentage and a 64.71 high danger chances for percentage.
Final Grade B
I'll grade Protas a B simply because he was outstanding when it came to the analytics. He bascially was a younger and more reliable version of Anthony Mantha who also can shore up the penalty kill better heading into next season. The PK already was good but can Protas take it to the next level is what we hope he works on this summer.
